Prof. dr. Milan Jazbec je veleposlanik in redni profesor diplomacije, pisatelj in pesnik ter pripadnik prve generacije slovenskih diplomatov. Zaposlen je na Ministrstvu za zunanje in evropske zadeve Republike Slovenije. V slovenski diplomaciji je unikaten po kombinaciji izkušenj iz diplomacije, novinarstva, gospodarstva, politike, akademske sfere in književnosti.
Bil je šesti slovenski veleposlanik v Severni Makedoniji (2016–2020) in pred tem četrti slovenski veleposlanik v Turčiji (2010–2015), nerezidenčno akreditiran v Azerbajdžanu, Iraku, Iranu, Libanonu in Siriji. V ključnem obdobju slovenskega včlanjevanja v Nato je bil državni sekretar na obrambnem ministrstvu (2000–2004). V zunanjem ministrstvu je med drugim vodil Konzularni sektor (1996), Sektor za analize in raziskave (2006–2010) in Sektor za evropske države (2015-2016) ter bil pooblaščeni minister na veleposlaništvu v Stockholmu (1996–2000) in prvi slovenski konzul v Celovcu (1992–1995).
Doktoriral je na Univerzi v Celovcu (2000), leta 2015 je bil izvoljen za rednega profesorja diplomacije na Univerzi v Ljubljani. Na Fakulteti za slovenske in mednarodne študije od njene ustanovitve dalje predava diplomacijo, kakor tudi od jeseni 2005 na Fakulteti za državne in evropske študije, Nova univerza. Bil je gostujoči profesor na univerzah Bilkent, METU in Ankara (Turčija) kakor tudi v Severni Makedoniji na South East European University v Tetovu ter International Balkan University in University American College v Skopju (na slednji je stalni gostujoči profesor). Objavil je več kot 80 knjig ter je avtor več kot 140 člankov o diplomaciji in sorodnih temah, vse v sedemnajstih jezikih. Njegova biografija v sistemu COBISS obsega več kot 730 enot, bil je mentor devetim doktorjem znanosti in več kot 40 magistrom.
Leta 2021 je pri mednarodnem inštitutu Ifimes izšla trilogija njegovih izbranih prispevkov z naslovom »Znanstvena misel in publicistično delo Milana Jazbeca: 1990-2021« (knjige: Diplomacija v prizmi; Dan je vsak na novo stkan; Varnost, obramba in Slovenija). Sedaj piše dve veliki seriji knjig o diplomaciji: v slovenščini »Diplomacija in slovenstvo« (prva knjiga Slovenska diplomacija: Izbor prispevkov in pogledov 1990-2021) in v angleščini »The Badger School of Diplomacy« (prva knjiga Diplomacy and Globalization: Theorizing, Cases and Synergies). Zaključuje prvo slovensko trilogijo o diplomaciji z naslovom »Dama v belem« (prva knjiga Mavrica izza duše, druga Iskanje izgubljene duše) ter ustvarja zbirko črtic o diplomaciji z naslovom »Diplomatske kronike« (prva knjiga Diplomati v novih oblačilih). Razvija sociologijo diplomacije in se posveča stičišču diplomacije in literature.
Od leta 2009 je odgovorni urednik mednarodne znanstvene revije European Perspectives, že vrsto let sodeluje z Diplo Foundation (www.diplomacy.edu), Ženeva, ter je med avtorji gesel za Enciklopedijo slovenske osamosvojitve, državnosti in ustavnosti. Leta 2005 je prejel avstrijsko državno odlikovanje veliki zlati častni znak z zvezdo za zasluge za Republiko Avstrijo in leta 2013 srebrno priznanje Slovenske vojske.

Prof Dr Milan Jazbec is a Slovene diplomat and ambassador, member of the first generation of Slovene diplomats, employed at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenija, professor of diplomacy, poet and writer. He stands out for a unique combination of his experiences from diplomacy, journalism, economy, politics, academy as well as literature.
He was the sixth Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the Republic of North Macedonia (2016-2020) and the fourth Slovene Ambassador to Turkey (2010-2015), being also accredited on a non-residential basis to Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria. His previous diplomatic postings include Sweden (1996–2000) and Austria (1992–1995, the first Slovene Consul in Klagenfurt). He held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among them Director of the Consular Department (1996), Director of the Policy Planning and Research Department (2006–2010) and Director of the Department for European States (2015-2016). He was State Secretary at the Ministry of Defense (2000–2004).
He gained his Phd at the University of Klagenfurt (2000) and was elected Full Professor of Diplomacy at the University of Ljubljana (2015). He is lecturing diplomacy at the Faculty of Slovene and International Studies since its establishment and also since 2005 at the Faculty for Governmental and European Studies, NOVA University. He was visiting professor at Universities of Bilkent, METU and Ankara (Turkey), as well as in North Macedonia at the South East European University in Tetovo, and at the International Balkan University and also at the University American College in Skopje, where he is a permanent visiting professor. He has more than 730 entries in the Slovene academic bibliography COBISS and was mentor to nine PhD candidates and more than 40 M.A.
He has published more than eighty books and is the author of more than one hundred fourty articles on diplomacy and related topics, all in seventeen languages. In 2021 the International Institute IFIMES published a selection of his articles with the title “Scientific Views and Other Works of Milan Jazbec: 1990-2021”. He is working on two editions on diplomacy: the first one in Slovene language with the title “Diplomacy and Slovenes” (the first book Slovene Diplomacy: Selected papers 1990-2021) and the English one with the title “The Badger School of Diplomacy” (the first book Diplomacy and Globalization: Theorizing, Cases and Synergies). He is finishing the first Slovene trilogy of novels on diplomacy with the title “Lady in White” (the first book Rainbow Beyond the Soul and the second In a Search of a Lost Soul) as well as writing a series of short stories on diplomacy with the title “Diplomatic Chronicles” (the first book Diplomats in New Clothes). He is developing sociology of diplomacy and is researching the intersection between diplomacy and literature.
He is the cofounding editor of the international scientific journal European perspectives (since 2009), a Senior Fellow at Diplo (www.diplomacy.edu), Geneva, as well as one of the contributing authors to the Encyclopedia of the Slovene independence, statehood and constitutionality. In 2005 he received the Austrian state decoration the grand golden decoration of honour with the star for the merit for the Republic of Austria and in 2013 the silver award of the Slovene Armed Forces.
